Entry Overview: As we exposed earlier this year, indicted GOP fundraiser Heather Lombardi is still profiting off Republican campaigns. Now we find out that state representative Karl Bohnak is spending heavily to retain her services.

Key Facts:

  • Heather Lombardi was indicted for her role in a “dark money” scheme and later plead guilty.

  • Despite being charged and her guilty plea, Republican campaigns still use Heather Lombardi’s services.

  • State Representative Karl Bohnak has spent over $20,000 on “consulting” services with Heather Lombardi

Why it Matters: Karl Bohnak is an elected official trusted to make decisions about laws that govern us, budgets that spend billions in taxpayer dollars and to represent our ideals as a state. Choosing someone who plead guilty to charges stemming from her time as a campaign treasurer brings Karl Bohnak’s judgment into question.

Full Entry: State Representative Karl Bohnak has spent over $20,000 in campaign funds to hire Heather Lombardi, a political operative who pleaded guilty as part of an investigation into a ballot question committee.

Beginning in 2025, Bohnak made several payments of $1,700 to Lombardi for “consulting” and made an initial payment of $3,425 on April 1, 2025. Bohnak made payments monthly in 2025 and added another payment of $3,140.44 on May 14 of this year. In total, Bohnak has given over $20,000 to Lombardi.

As a state representative, Karl Bohnak should know that how money is spent invites scrutiny. In this case, Bohnak chose to invest in someone who plead guilty for her role as a campaign treasurer. People in his district have a right to question Karl Bohnak’s ability to make good choices about budget and who he surrounds himself with.
